Reasons For A Stadium Complex

The box below shows how 12 cities have answered the "why not?" question of "why a new stadium. In the past five years, 7 cities have built new stadiums (Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, and Landover, Md. 3 cities will open news ones this year (Foxboro, MA, Houston, Seattle), and 2 open soon, Philadelphia in 2003 and New Orleans in 2006. 1 team has been unable to get a stadium built, Minnesota Vikings, and is now looking for a new city to relocate to that will build a stadium. If we go back 5-10 years, we have to add these 5 other cities to the list as well: Atlanta, Jacksonville, St. Louis, Oakland, and Carolina. So, what about San Diego? Will we join them or be left behind?

Our mission at www.chargersstadium.com, is to update our fellow NFL football fans, our fellow San Diego Chargers fans, and all with an interest in the economic and quality of life vitality of San Diego, on the importance of building a new or renovated stadium as part of a mixed-use development complex at Mission Valley, doing so without raising any new taxes. We all need as much information as possible to be able to make an informed decision regarding supporting or not supporting a renovated or new football stadium complex. We see it as our mission to keep reminding everyone that this is about San Diego, not just the Chargers, although it is the Chargers that makes it work, and, to repeat, it is also about building a new or renovated stadium without raising new taxes.

It is time for the City or the Chargers or both together, to stand up and say: "We are committed to keeping the Chargers in San Diego and using them to leverage a new stadium complex for the economic and quality of life benefits of San Diego without raising new taxes to do so. Who will stand up to start the ball rolling?

Reasons for a renovated or new stadium include:

  • It is important to the economic vitality of San Diego
  • It can be done without raising new taxes
  • It offers a chance to create new jobs and solidify old ones
  • It means getting two Super Bowls a decade (best weather in January in the U.S.A.), which means $1 Billion to San Diego (over $250 million impact on San Diego at the last Super Bowl).
  • It guarantees keeping the Holiday Bowl game.
  • It would provide a state of the art stadium for the San Diego State Aztecs.
  • It would provide another tourist destination place.
  • It would help expand the tourist orbit from the ocean to Mission Valley.
  • It offers developers of retail and office space another dynamic option.
  • It will continue to enhance the vitalization of Mission Valley.
  • It will provide a place for parking, partying, and tailgating at games.
  • It will provide more traffic for existing businesses, hotels, and other area attractions.
  • What is good for Mission Valley is good for downtown.
